Police had a mountain to climb in order to bypass the Unit Trust Corporation (UTC) to be winner of the Championship Division in the Courts All Sectors Netball League but it did not materialise instead it fell to a surprise 43-42 defeat to Fire.

It was an impossible ask from the get go for Police when it met Fire in their final league match on Tuesday evening at the Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence in Macoya

The policewomen would have had to win by a margin of 37 goals to elevate to the top of the eight-team standings to knock off UTC, who emerged the champion ending the season with six victories and a loss for a total of 12 points.

Police placed second with the same - five-win, two-loss - record as third-placed Bermudez but had a better goal-difference of 48 compared to Bermudez's 11.

Fire, which finished in seventh place, earned only its second win for the season thanks to the shooting of Cameisha Leslie, who netted 29 goals from 54 attempts.

Her goal-attack Daniella Hall added the other 14 goals from 25 tries in a match which their team led by a narrow one goal (13-12) at the end of the first period.

That lead was shortlived as Police, off the shooting of Jeselle Navarro (21/25) and Donessa Wickham (20/33), pulled ahead at the half, 24-20 maintaining its lead into the third session to lead 34-31 heading into the fourth period.

Fire fought back well outscoring its opponent, 12-8, in the final session to claim the narrow one-goal win.
