Four teams will battle it out for the top spot in the women's division at the annual Netball verses Cancer (NvC) being hosted by the Team Burke-Browne Foundation at the Central Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Chaguanas today (Sunday). The action in the third edition of the competition, themed “Ribbons of Hope”, starts at 9 am.
All Stars Point Fortin, CHIPS, Las Lomas and Malvern will meet in that category as the Foundation seek to raise awareness about the deadly disease cancer, which has affected a number of local netballers and the country on the whole.
Coordinator of the non-profit organisation Jaime Browne remains committed to the cause citing that one of the charges of NvC is to raise awareness and educate the public about cancer.
Again the lines of the court will be coloured in blue and teal to represent the fight against prostrate and ovarian cancer, respectively.
"Every year the colour scheme used to inform about the different types," said Browne. "Light blue is to represent prostrate, teal is for ovarian. There will always be a touch of lavender (All Cancers) and pink for breast cancer, which are the core colors of the initiative."
Another four teams will also compete in the Youth Division including CHIPS, Police Youth Club, Tamana Warriors and Tunapuna Tigers while CHIPS, Las lomas and Malvern will play in the men's contest.
"Men are also affected by various types of cancer and we want to show the men in our life, our fathers, brothers, cousins, husbands, significant others that we care," said Browne, whose passion stems from the loss of her mother Angela Burke-Browne, a former national netballer, who passed away from cancer in 2014.
